Snowdrop Painting

A wonderful book we enjoy reading during our brief but precious downtime on board is 'Here Comes Jack Frost' by Kazuno Kohara. Last fall the Ebony Oyster crew planted snowdrop/galanthus flowers for the specific purpose of painting them. This one bloomed only within the last two days. We've had to shield the tender bud from the harsh tropical sun.

This is junior crew member Effervescent Ethel's snowdrop painting as inspired by the book and also Google images.

Need:

-white paint
-green paint (we mixed some white paint in with the green to get a color as close to the natural green hue of snowdrop leaves)
-small paintbrushes
-paper
-salt or white sugar (for the snow effect)  <<---optional   Effervescent Ethel painted a swatchbuckle swatch of white paint then sprinkled salt on top of the still wet paint for the snow effect.

Spin Heart

Source: http://spoonful.com/crafts/spin-art-heart

Waiting for our completed paper plate spin hearts to dry...

Need:

-paper plates (we used small dessert size plates and dinner size plates)
-scissors
-paint
-salad spinner
-(optional) glitter, stickers, sequins, etc. to decorate
-hole punch
-ribbon, string, yarn for hanging (a noose would be too bulky)

We cut out the hearts *first*, made a hole punch (using a heart shaped hole punch) to hang them then spun painted the hearts.

Toilet Paper Roll Valentines

One extra special toilet paper roll Valentine for crew member Effervescent Ethel.

Source: http://sweetandlovelycrafts.blogspot.com/2011/01/kids-valentine-craft.html

Just some of the many ribbon spools we plundered and used for this small craft project:

Waiting for the whitewashed toilet paper rolls to dry.

Arrr me Hearties!

Notes from the Cap'n: Recipient's names were written on the back of each Valentine heart. We glued the hearts onto the rolls, too instead of taping. You can also name and date the rolls on the inside if you prefer.

Supplies used:

-good quality construction paper (we like the construction paper from IKEA-if it's still sold there)
-scissors
-glue
-crayons, color markers and permanent markers
-hole punch
-googly eyes in various sizes and colors
-white paint
-ribbon
-loose glitter

Fairy Baton

There are fairy wands and then there are fairy batons. This fairy baton-handmade and created by our celebrated, revered and afeared Cap'n Mad Ellen serves as a befitting accoutrement to fairy dancing: irish jig, quadrille, Hempen jig (for extra special occasions). Enough said.

Our last raid and plunder garnered us, the crew of the Ebony Oyster almost 2 tonnes of lace and fancy ribbon! Let's small craft!

Need:

-1/2" diameter wood dowel about 10-15 inches long (ours measured approximately 12 inches)
-spray paint (usually in silver or gold but it's your choice)
-various colors of ribbon
-sequins, rhinestones, glitter, etc for decorating
-glue
-(optional) Fray Check™ (this product helps to keep the ribbons ends from fraying)

Spray paint the wood dowel. Set aside to dry.

Choose ribbon of various lengths using narrow ribbon for tying all the ribbons together.  Gather all the ribbons together. Tie a narrow piece of ribbon into a knot about 3 inches down from the ribbons ends. Leave long length of narrow ribbon for tying the ribbons to the dowel. Cap'n Mad Ellen tied the narrow ribbon in a crisscross/ballet slipper fashion. (See photo)

Add embellishments of your choosing: glitter, rhinestones, sequins, fancy buttons, etc. Set aside to dry. We stood up our fairy baton in an old Mason canning jar and let dry overnight.

Now DANCE or else!
